The bi-annual competition has become the most prominent 'science/architecture/engineering fair' I can think of, and I hope the Department of the Interior reconsiders its decision to move the event from the National Mall in Washington &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;to a location to be determined. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As President Obama suggested in his State of the Union address, “we need to teach our kids that it’s not just the winner of the Super  Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair.” Innovation and Collaboration is essential to the future of the American Economy. Showcasing the innovative and collaborative spirit the Decathlon represents seems like a great place to start. Let's keep it on the Mall!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Interface Multimedia is proud to have helped the University of Maryland  Solar Decathlon team race to submit their entry in the Department of  Energy's bi-annual contest. Interface optimized and rendered the  animations setup by the students in order to meet the submission  deadline.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The UM team was selected as one of 20 teams from around the world to participate in the 2011 effort. I've been seamlessly making this trip for years but for some reason this time the differences depressed me. I love to root for my hometown but fear various development and zoning decisions push the city farther and farther from the goal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Currently Mesa is preparing to vote to help build a new ballpark for the Chicago Cubs spring training facility. The wildly popular Cubs will likely win the vote, but unfortunately the powers that be seem to have given up on the chance to build a new park just 2 blocks east of the original site of Rendezvous Park, the Cubs training facility from 1952-1965. While efforts to make Downtown Mesa more relevant progress slowly, its surprising they've chosen to ignore their past and the excellent example the Giants Stadium offers in downtown Scottsdale. A facility within walking distance of the restaurants, shops, galleries, hotels, and canals that make Scottsdale unique.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Upon my return to DC, I spent time in the new &lt;a href="http://www.yardspark.org/"&gt;Yards Park&lt;/a&gt; just east of the Nationals new stadium along the Anacostia. For years Interface has been asked to reference these storm water strategies in proposals, presentations, and illustrations but I'd never seen them in action.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the squall line of thunderstorms on Sunday July 25th I took shelter on my bicycle under the arcade of the Waterview Office Building in Rosslyn.
