Innovation on the Mall

The Solar Decathlon sponsored by the Department of Energy is an exciting celebration of creativity and innovation. The bi-annual competition has become the most prominent 'science/architecture/engineering fair' I can think of, and I hope the Department of the Interior reconsiders its decision to move the event from the National Mall in Washington to a location to be determined.

As President Obama suggested in his State of the Union address, “we need to teach our kids that it’s not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair.” Innovation and Collaboration is essential to the future of the American Economy. Showcasing the innovative and collaborative spirit the Decathlon represents seems like a great place to start. Let's keep it on the Mall!!

Interface Multimedia is proud to have helped the University of Maryland Solar Decathlon team race to submit their entry in the Department of Energy's bi-annual contest. Interface optimized and rendered the animations setup by the students in order to meet the submission deadline.

The local supermarket is getting a face-lift? A new supermarket is coming to a neighborhood that has been without one for decades? Or, a new supermarket is being built as the retail anchor of a brand new neighborhood. The District has seen it all.

As the District's retail renaissance continues WDCEP's annual report states that the city has had 15 new grocery stores built since 2000 with more on the way.

Renovated stores help rejuvenate existing neighborhoods while new stores make emerging neighborhoods move viable. Here is a collection of animations and illustrations Interface Multimedia has created documenting this trend.

SMPS Marketers Forum: Biz Dev and Beyond

The resounding theme at this years Marketers Forum was "We all need to do more with less!"

Everyone at the event touched on some aspect of how our job responsibilities are encompassing more and more each day. Bill Long at Trinium Resource Group even went so far as to say that the TRUE Business Development job title is dead. More and more Partners, Principals and even Marketing Directors are tacking on BD roles and responsibilities to their job descriptions.

Other interesting talks at the Forum included how to get CRM and Social Networking (online and off-line) to work harder for you. Scott Butcher of JDB Engineering delivered a power presentation about the concepts of brand recognition in the AEC market.

Finally, I presented some ideas to the group about how digital asset management can allow teams of people to collaborate better and faster. Doing More with Less! We gave some examples of how our clients are using the iDAM Digital Asset Manager to automate the process of creating powerpoint presentations, project cutsheets and video presentations.

Interface Multimedia was hired by the Rosslyn Business Improvement District to produce and direct an exciting and energetic video describing Rosslyn today.

IFM shot all High Definition footage of the Rosslyn city center and surrounding areas to create this exciting video overview.

Having worked for both Monday Properties and JBG during the entitlement process, it was interesting that the Arlington County approvals process seemed to focus on the buildings individually.

Culture Shock

Returning to Washington, DC (27th largest US City) after a week in Mesa, AZ (39th largest US City) I suffered from a bit of culture shock. I've been seamlessly making this trip for years but for some reason this time the differences depressed me. I love to root for my hometown but fear various development and zoning decisions push the city farther and farther from the goal.

Currently Mesa is preparing to vote to help build a new ballpark for the Chicago Cubs spring training facility. The wildly popular Cubs will likely win the vote, but unfortunately the powers that be seem to have given up on the chance to build a new park just 2 blocks east of the original site of Rendezvous Park, the Cubs training facility from 1952-1965. While efforts to make Downtown Mesa more relevant progress slowly, its surprising they've chosen to ignore their past and the excellent example the Giants Stadium offers in downtown Scottsdale. A facility within walking distance of the restaurants, shops, galleries, hotels, and canals that make Scottsdale unique.

Upon my return to DC, I spent time in the new Yards Park just east of the Nationals new stadium along the Anacostia. The differences couldn't be more stark.

Qtag Update

Within iDAM by WebArchives, Qtag - Quick Tagging allows a user to add free-form tags without leaving a search results page. When I find something I like, I always try to leave behind an additional tag or two that will help others find the asset next time.

As part of the 2nd Quarter updates to iDAM the Qtag tool as been integrated with all keyword sets within the system. Keyword sets include all of the tags or labels established by the adminstrator of the collection.

Let it Rain

I'm excited and interested to see urban rain gardens and bio-retention areas becoming more common in urban Washington, DC locations. For years Interface has been asked to reference these storm water strategies in proposals, presentations, and illustrations but I'd never seen them in action.

During the squall line of thunderstorms on Sunday July 25th I took shelter on my bicycle under the arcade of the Waterview Office Building in Rosslyn. This storm reportedly generated 60-75mph winds...

After the deluge I saw these rain gardens working hard at the Georgetown Waterfront and along H Street at the City Center site. Both of these examples seem to collect runoff from the park or runoff from the adjacent parking lot but not the street.

Locations with less land to work with require a different approach and two new interesting examples have just been completed in the District. The first along 1st Street, NE at Constitution Square by Stonebridge Carras and the second at 3rd and Water Street, SE adjacent to the new Yards Park by Forest City Washington. Both of these examples actually draw water directly off of the adjacent street.

Illustrating the State of Metropolitan America

Brookings today released a report titled, "State of Metropolitan America". Interface is pleased to be working with Julie Wagner and the Metropolitan Policy Program to create illustrations and animations which highlight how the character of cities and metros has changed since 2000. Our work will be specifically used to punctuate topics discussed during the keynote speech by Bruce Katz planned for Tuesday, May 11th, 2010.

Of particular interest is how the traditional Census based regional definitions have become outdated.
Today, Washington, DC for example has much more in common with Austin, TX or Tucson, AZ than its geographic neighbors Baltimore or Philadelphia.

Diamond Teague Shines

The new Diamond Teague Park is definitely worth after a visit to a Nationals Game. The park offers a great hint of things to come along the river.

FCMC Navy Hawaii Tsunami Warning

As the world watched to see the impact of the Tsunami triggered by the Chilean earthquake on February 27th, 2010, Interface helped Forest City Military Communities pass critical information to their residents. Via a targeted email blast and a timely update to their website FCMC was able to update over 4000 military residents on the Island of Oahu which live in low lying coastal neighborhoods required to evacuate. Thankfully for all, the impact of the Tsunami was minimal.

"Even though there was no damage, your assistance came at a crucial time. The email system we were using did not work, for unknown reasons. I was afraid that we were not going to be able to reach our residents as a potentially life-threatening event approached. Then you emailed us asking if we needed help. Sending an email on a Saturday morning, asking if we’re okay and offering your assistance was amazing customer service and showed that you obviously care about Forest City."
